Accepted Answer

The equipment which Icarus supplies meets the industry standards in terms of efficiency, reliability, availability, and the ability to cool. They are designed and tested to meet or exceed current relevant legislation.

Can Icarus provide solutions to large-scale applications?

Accepted Answer

At Icarus we tailor our offerings from, small to medium to large scale applications. There is no ceiling limit to what we can work with in terms of capacities and physical sizes of systems and equipment.

Do I need anti-freeze and if so what type?

Accepted Answer

Icarus always recommend dosing a water circuit with combined anti-freeze inhibitor solution.  The type of fluid would depend on your industry application and the operating temperatures; plus environment the unit sits in to determine the quantity required.

Do I need separate tanks/pumps or are they part of the chiller?

Icarus offer complete package chillers which includes tanks and pumps. We can also supply without a tank or pump; we would need to tailor the solution for your application requirements.

Do Icarus charge for contingency planning and what does it include?

Typically, Icarus do not charge for a basic contingency plan, unless there is a large amount of time and travel involved. Post survey, the client would receive a written recommendation to include all key points that require pre-planning or what our hire solution would look like, if it needed to be delivered.

Icarus can offer the option to our clients for equipment lease.  A long-term lease would be linked to final purchase and/or the installation requirements centric to a package solution.

In the example where we have provided an end-to-end solution for a client, such as the chiller, piping and installation, Icarus will provide a training package post commissioning. This would include a written guide to SOPs or standard operating procedures, highlighting any specific tasks.

In general, a chiller would initially require water to fill a fluid circuit and then would need to be topped up or maintained on a regular basis to ensure optimum performance.

How does an industrial chiller work?

An industrial chiller works by utilising a fluid medium which is chilled by a refrigeration circuit. The chilled fluid medium then utilises a heat rejection process, whereby the heat created by a process is drawn back to the chiller and chilled. Heat is rejected from the process side by utilising a fluid medium via a heat exchanger and works in a continuous cycle to reduce the temperature over time.

The key benefit of long-term hire means the client can reduce the impact of a potential capital purchase whilst minimising downtime.  Usually Hire Equipment is available immediately when selected from our stocked hire fleet.  Whereas for a capital purchase, Icarus may need to factory order a configured piece of equipment if it is not in stock - adding delays.

What happens if I breakdown out of normal business hours?

At Icarus we can offer out of hours support to our customers, who have a service level agreement in place.  We would take the call, manage it, escalate it and organise an engineer to attend a site or incident. If you are not a maintenance customer, then we can still offer support at an agreed level, following some basic questions prior to attendance.

For any hire equipment that Icarus provides, we also include a service facility which would mirror a service agreement.  Therefore, an engineer can be dispatched in the event of an issue or if it was for a long-term hire, we would plan and maintain the unit over that period, as part of the hire package.

What is a blast cooler?

Accepted Answer

A blast cooler utilises ambient air drawn through a cooling coil to reject heat through fluid medium.  The blast cooler operates by cooling water flowing from a process or from a sub circuit, which then passes through a finned coil assembly.   The cooling effect utilises fan arrangements drawing ambient air through the coils.  The leaving water is usually about 10 degrees lower than when it entered the cooler. Typically blast coolers are used as a sub process or where you do not need consistent lower temperature chilled water. Usually, water temperatures of 12 degrees Celsius and above would be the optimum application to use a cooler.

What is the difference between HVAC and Industrial Process Chillers?

HVAC chillers are usually suited to temperature control for office or retail spaces or for example, supermarkets, leisure and data centres. Whereas Industrial Process Chillers typically cover remaining markets, including manufacturing and process sectors, such as Biogas, pharmaceuticals, plastics and laser.  Process chillers are expected to deliver robust, reliable cooling consistently. Therefore, a process chiller would typically be directly coupled to a machine or process. A HVAC chiller would generally serve an Air handling or Fan Coil arrangement.

What is the difference between an adiabatic cooler and a blast cooler?

The difference between a blast cooler and an adiabatic cooler essentially is one is dry and one considered wet. A Blast Cooler becomes a 'Wet' cooler when the option called adiabatic cooling is added to it. Adiabatic Cooling utilises a pretreated potable water supply to essentially wet the incoming air.  As adiabatic cooler is drawing the ambient air through the coils surface area, it sprays a mist of water that further reduces the dew point which adds an extra layer of cooling effect. The benefits include sustainable higher performance in warmer weather conditions. Therefore, all year round an adiabatic cooler can consistently provide the same amount of cooling versus a blast cooler, which offer reduced performance in higher ambient weather.

What is the difference between an air-cooled chiller and a water-cooled chiller?

An air-cooled chiller is designed to be sited in the ambient air or at least have access to a fresh air supply. This ensures that the refrigeration condenser can achieve optimum performance in all temperature ranges.

A water-cooled chiller requires a third-party piece of equipment, such as a cooling tower to reject the heat created by the refrigeration cycle, which would require ambient air to reject heat from a cooling tower or remote condenser.

An air-cooled chiller requires a specific amount of ambient air to effectively complete the heat rejection cycle.  Therefore, too little space around the chiller will mean that the product performance and reliability can be compromised.
